North Charleston might become known as South Carolina's most notable "Boom Town." Incorporated in June 1972, North Charleston had a population of 21,000 and an area of seven square miles. Since that time, the city has tripled its population to over 80,000 and now encompasses more than 60 square miles. Today, North Charleston is a vibrant city that attracts more than 2 million visitors annually. This thriving region boasts a 13,500-seat coliseum (home to East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) minor league hockey team the SC Stingrays), a convention center, a performing arts center and an adjacent hotel complex. The city has excellent shopping facilities, malls, restaurants and beautifully planned neighborhoods.

From Remount Road to the Neck area near old Baker Hospital, North Charleston is reinventing itself in a series of massive redevelopment projects.One such development is the Mixson Avenue project in the Park Circle area, which is being developed by the award winning I’On Group.

 

I recently had the pleasure of hearing Vince Graham founder of the I’On Group speak at an AMA meeting in Mount Pleasant. Vince is a passionate advocate for advancing human-scaled urbanism and Mixson is a prime example of that.

Mixson is roughly 43 acres and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Liberty Hill, Palmetto Gardens, and Olde North Charleston. The Mixson Neighborhood is currently in the planning and engineering phase, although substantial demolition is nearly complete. Over time, this project will have services, shops and workplaces along Durant and Mixson Avenues, creating a walkable destination for many historic North Charleston neighborhoods.

Great urban neighborhoods have a variety of people living, shopping, and working within their midst. That diversity of people is essential to thriving cities, and to North Charleston.
